How to take your own measurements

Being able to take your own measurements is crucial for buying Made To Order clothes, but also makes it so much easier to buy clothes online when you aren’t able to try them on. Fortunately, it’s also really straightforward, and all you need is a flexible tape measure!

Tips:

  • Ensure you’re standing naturally, in a relaxed position

  • Make sure the measuring tape is flat, not too loose or pulled tight

  • It can be helpful to stand in front of a mirror

When garment measurements are given in a product description these indicate the true dimensions of the garment rather than the size. ‘Ease’ is the term given for the difference between actual body measurements and garment measurements, which will vary based on the desired fit. Some by hamlet pieces are therefore described as fitting multiple sizes - UK 8-12 for example - to allow you to decide how you would like the piece to fit you.

The chest/bust measurement should be taken at the widest point, keeping the tape measure even around the front and back.

The hip measurement should be taken at the widest point, keeping the tape measure even around the front and back.

The waist measurement should be taken at the narrowest point (the natural waist), keeping the tape measure even around the front and back.

The inside leg measurement should be taken from the crotch to the ankle, keeping the tape measure straight.

The crotch depth measurement should be taken from the belly button to the lower back, roughly where your trousers sit.

The shoulder measurement should be taken between the outer edge of the shoulders, keeping the tape measure straight.
